Behind The Agency: How We Approach A New Client

Stripes horizontal

Choosing a digital marketing agency shouldn’t just be about which channels they can manage or how impressive their case studies look (though ours are quite impressive). It’s about understanding how they’ll work as an extension of your business, how they’ll identify the best opportunities, and what happens after the initial sign off.

At Starlight Digital, we believe the strongest client relationships start with a clear process.  Whether we’re taking over an established paid media account or helping a business build its PPC or social ads from the start, we follow our structured approach that’s designed to understand your current brand, identify where growth is possible, and build a roadmap for getting there.

It’s never a one-size-fits-all formula since every client has different goals, audiences, challenges and opportunities. However, to get a good client overview, here’s what our 5 step process usually looks like behind the scenes.

1. Onboarding: Getting to know your business

Before we start, we want to understand who you are. Our onboarding process is all about gathering as much insight as possible into your brand, including your objectives, UPS and your vision for the future.

This means looking beyond just the advertising accounts. We want to know what you are trying to achieve, who your customers are, what a valuable lead or sale actually look like to you, what your priorities are for the next few months, and where you want the business to be in the longer term.

This initial immersion gives our specialists the context they need to make better decisions with you, and it also means we’re not starting on assumptions. The main goal is to make sure your marketing activity is fully connected to the wider objectives of the business, rather than simply optimising individual campaigns for one off success.

2. Review: Finding the opportunities

Once we understand your business, we turn our attention to the existing marketing activity. For established paid media accounts, our review covers 60 points, giving us a very detailed look at the account and its campaigns. We’re particularly looking for what’s working, what’s holding performance back and, importantly, where there are more opportunities for growth.

If a business is starting from scratch with paid media, the process is slightly different. Instead of auditing an existing account, we assess the competitor landscape and target audiences to understand how the business needs to differentiate itself.

This second stage is about creating a clear picture of your current situation before deciding what may need change or improvement. We can’t build a meaningful strategy without understanding the starting point.

3. Strategy: Building a roadmap

This is where our findings become action. We can create a full strategy across the agreed channels, covering potential areas such as targeting and bidding, campaign structure, ad copy, and creative assets. We also evaluate conversion and tidy up tracking where required, making sure we’re measuring the actions that actually matter to the business.

The most important part is that the strategy is built around your objectives. We don’t believe in taking the same strategy from one account and applying it to another.

A B2B company trying to generate qualified leads has very different requirements from an e-commerce brand trying to increase revenue. And a business entering a competitive market needs a different approach from one looking to scale an already moderately successful campaign.

The strategy needs to reflect the individual brand. Our aim is to create a roadmap that gives everyone a clear understanding of what we’re doing and the aims of why we’re doing it.

4. Implementation: Putting the strategy into action

Implementation is where we begin introducing the new agreed upon strategy and campaign structure, putting our recommendations from the roadmap into practice.

This could mean restructuring campaigns, refining targeting, improving SEO, changing bidding strategies, introducing new channels and campaigns or making improvements to conversion tracking. The exact work depends entirely on the project scope and this is where collaboration really matters.

We don’t operate as a team that disappears into the background and returns a few months later with a report. We work as an extension of your team, keeping priorities visible and making sure activity is moving forward. Our approach combines the flexibility of an independent agency with paid media specialist expertise across all the channels we manage.

5. Reporting & optimisation: The work doesn’t stop at launch

One of the biggest misconceptions we see about digital marketing is that once campaigns are live, the job is done. But in reality, this is when the work really begins.

Once everything is up and running, we create a bespoke KPI dashboard that gives clients 24/7 access to all their performance data. Our dashboards can bring together data from platforms including Google, Meta, Bing, TikTok, GA4, etc, creating an easy to manage, viewing platform of performance. This can then also be tailored around the metrics and segments that matter most to your business.

We track performance daily, looking for trends and anomalies and using real-time insight into metrics such as spend, leads, sales, CPA, revenue and ROAS to keep activity on track. And then we can optimise.

Your campaigns need to be constantly evolving as the performance data comes in to grow successfully. Our optimisation cycles are designed to keep improving performance rather than simply maintaining the figures.

Why this approach matters

Ultimately, our process comes down to one thing: making sure marketing activity has a purpose. We don’t want to just take over an account and make a few surface-level changes. We want to understand your business first. Then we review the data, identify opportunities, build a strategy, implement it properly and continually optimise based on what we learn.

That’s why our five-step framework moves from Onboarding → Review → Strategy → Implementation → Reporting & Optimisation.

And it’s also why our approach is deliberately bespoke. The result we’re looking for isn’t simply a better-looking Google Ads account or a bigger monthly Meta report. It’s sustainable, optimised growth.
